Message to employees

I’m writing today to address the senseless death of George Floyd and the anti-Black racism we are seeing all around us. The events of the past week have served as a painful reminder of systemic racism and its impact on Black people and people of colour. To everyone impacted by these events, we know we need to do better and we are committed to learning, listening and taking action to address racism. As a society and as individuals, we should ask ourselves “How are we going to do better?”

First, I want to clearly state that racism and prejudice have no place at OPG. If you see, hear or are aware of discrimination or harassment, say something. Speak to your supervisor, union representative or HR Business Partner. We have been striving to build a culture of inclusion that respects everybody’s right to a workplace free from any form of racism or discrimination.

Second, we know we have work to do to address racism, bias and systemic barriers at the individual, organizational and community level. Learning is a continuous process; this week, I’m taking steps to further educate myself about anti-Black racism and reflecting on how I can do better. I will be speaking to my team and colleagues about actions we can take and encourage you to do the same.

Third, OPG will be providing scholarship funding through the Black Business and Professional Association to support Black students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and/or math, and studying to become tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and inventors. These scholarships are a step towards breaking down the systemic barriers Black students face in entering these professions.

In keeping with our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we will continue to confront racism and bias. The more we understand about racism, the more we can be a force for change. Let’s continue the discussion and together, we can create a more equitable OPG.
